Who are you?

Hi, my name is Erin Turner. I'm a consultant psychiatrist, and I'm here to answer your questions on psychosis.

Have you studied psychosis for a long time?

Well, I've been a consultant for about 15 years now, and I have worked with individuals suffering with psychosis for all that time.

What is psychosis?

Well, I think psychosis is really misunderstood, so hopefully my answers will help clarify things for you. Psychosis is effectively a mental disorder that can affect our thoughts, our perceptions, and our emotions. People experiencing psychosis lose contact with reality. Now, psychosis is different for every individual, but there are some common experiences that actually bind psychosis together, and those are delusions, hallucinations, and thought disorder. Psychosis can be a really scary and distressing experience for people. And if you are experiencing psychosis, please remember that you're not alone because psychosis is commoner than people realise. Up to 3% of the population experience psychosis at some point in their lives. And the other thing to remember about psychosis is it is treatable. So if you are experiencing psychosis, please seek help as early as you can because the earlier you get help, the better Your long-term recovery will be.
